If you’ve lived long enough, you already know — life has its ups, downs, and everything in between.

There are moments when everything feels right, and others when nothing seems to go your way.

It’s easy to feel happy in good times, and it’s perfectly normal not to feel that way when things fall apart.

But here’s the real challenge: how do you stay happy and keep enjoying life when times are tough?

In this article, I’ll share five practical ways to stay grounded, find happiness, and live meaningfully — no matter what life throws at you.

1. Your Perspective Determines Your Response

When something happens to you, your response is driven by perspective.

Recently, I experienced something unpleasant. Someone contacted me pretending to be someone else.

At first, I believed them. But over time, I realized they were lying.

Of course, I was disappointed.

Yet instead of dwelling on the disappointment, I focused on the fact that I uncovered the lies.

I reviewed our conversations and saw that I had acted cautiously — which eventually helped me expose the deception.

By looking at the situation from multiple angles, I felt good about how it ended. Perspective changed everything.

2. Remember Good Times During Bad Times

I have an eight-year-old son.

He often focuses on what goes wrong. For example, he plays a ball-throwing game with his mum before bedtime.

Every time they play, he complains that she doesn’t throw the ball hard enough.

I always remind him: “How about enjoying the fact that your mum is playing with you, instead of fixating on what you don’t like?”

He’s only eight, so I get it. But as adults, we should remember the good times when life gets tough.

When I do this, I find bad times easier to manage. Gratitude lifts the spirit.

3. It’s Normal to Have Good and Bad Times

Many people feel shocked when bad things happen. They expect constant sunshine.

But here’s the truth: bad times are part of life.

One of my personal mantras is: plan to succeed but expect setbacks.

Expecting setbacks helps you prepare for them.

When you plan for challenges, you’re less likely to collapse when they arrive. That’s resilience in action.

4. No Life Cycle Lasts Forever — They Pass

This is a powerful mindset. Life moves in cycles — nothing lasts forever, whether joy or sorrow.

That’s why people save during prosperous times or take out insurance when things are good.

When you have a stable job, save — because jobs can be lost.

And when you lose one, don’t beat yourself up. If handled wisely, another opportunity will come.

I’ve lost jobs, businesses, and much more. Yet every time, I found a way to rise again.

So, don’t let any life cycle define you. Let principles guide you instead.

5. Learn Lessons from Every Season

If you’ve read my articles or Compass Points Newsletter, you know I often discuss experience.

Some lessons can’t be learned from books — they must be lived.

So, never waste an experience, good or bad.

In every situation, ask yourself, “What lesson can I draw from this?”

This simple question transforms pain into wisdom.

Each time I do this, I grow stronger and better prepared for the next challenge.

Conclusion

No one enjoys good times all the time — that’s not how life works.

We all face highs and lows; it’s the natural rhythm of existence.

In this article, I’ve shared five ways to stay happy: by choosing perspective, remembering good times, accepting the normalcy of bad times, recognizing that all seasons pass, and learning from every experience.

Happiness comes from how you interpret life’s cycles, not from avoiding them.

So, when life tests you, remember — it’s just a phase, not the whole story.
