This article is based on my personal experience with stubborn razor bumps. It is not medical advice. If you have similar symptoms, please consult a qualified healthcare professional before trying any treatment.
Shaving bumps are common. But when they turn stubborn, painful, and unresponsive, they can quickly become unbearable.
I never imagined something as “simple” as shaving would trap me in two months of pain, embarrassment, and frustration. I tried everything—from antibiotics to antifungal creams to well-reviewed Amazon products. Nothing worked.
This is the story of how I finally overcame them.
What Are Razor Bumps?
Razor bumps are small, raised spots that often appear after shaving. They can look like pimples, feel itchy, or become very sore.
The common cause is hair curling back into the skin instead of growing outward. This leads to ingrown hairs—hairs trapped under the skin that trigger redness, swelling, and pain.
In some cases, the bumps can get infected. Doctors call this folliculitis, which simply means inflammation or infection of the hair follicles.
For most people, razor bumps go away in a few days. But in some cases—like mine—they become stubborn, painful, and resistant to normal treatments.
Step 1: Withdrawing Supplements
When the bumps first appeared, my instinct was to look at what had changed. I asked myself: had I started a new supplement? Was there a new cream, lotion, or medication that could be causing this reaction?
I systematically withdrew anything I had recently introduced. I wanted to give my skin the best chance to heal naturally, free from external irritants.
Unfortunately, after days of waiting, nothing changed. The bumps remained stubborn, red, and painful. My jawline felt inflamed, and even the simplest daily task—like washing my face—was becoming unbearable. That was my first sign this wouldn’t be an easy journey.
Step 2: GP Consultation and Antibiotics
With no improvement, I contacted my GP. She asked me to send pictures of the bumps. After reviewing them, she diagnosed folliculitis, a condition where hair follicles become infected.
The GP prescribed me Flucloxacillin 500mg for seven days. At that moment, I felt hopeful. Antibiotics are strong and effective, so surely this would fix the issue.
But five days later, I saw no progress. The bumps looked the same—if not worse. I was discouraged and confused. How could antibiotics not make even the slightest difference? The pain was growing sharper, and my confidence was sinking.
Step 3: A&E Visit and Antifungal Cream
By the following weekend, I could no longer tolerate it. Since it was Sunday, I went to A&E. I explained the history and showed the doctor my worsening skin.
This time, the doctor suspected a fungal infection and prescribed Daktarin 2% w/w cream. His confidence gave me hope. I thought, “Maybe this is it—the real solution.”
I applied the antifungal cream diligently while still completing the antibiotic course. But after several days, my condition didn’t improve. The bumps grew, some blistered, and the pain only worsened. At that point, I realised I was stuck in a nightmare.
Step 4: Amazon Search and the Painful Ingrow Go
Feeling desperate, I turned to Amazon. I browsed countless reviews, searching for someone who had gone through what I was experiencing. That’s when I found a product called Ingrown Go by Skin Doctors.
One reviewer swore it worked miracles for their stubborn shaving bumps. Their story mirrored mine, so I convinced myself this was the breakthrough.
But from the very first application, I regretted it. The solution burned my already blistered skin, leaving me in agony. To make matters worse, I began experiencing headaches shortly after using it. What I thought was my saviour turned out to be another disappointment. I abandoned it after only a few days.
Step 5: My Wife’s 40% Zinc Oxide Recommendation
By now, I had lost faith in most treatments. My face was covered in painful blisters, and nothing worked. It was at this breaking point that my wife stepped in again.
She had suggested alternative remedies earlier, but I resisted. In my mind, medical treatments were the “proper” solution. But now, after everything had failed, I finally listened.
She recommended an ointment with at least 40% zinc oxide. I shaved off my beard to expose the full extent of the blisters—an eye-opening moment. My jawline looked raw, inflamed, and battered.
I searched Amazon and found BIO GHEE BUTTER by Hemp 4 Help, advertised as organic zinc oxide cream. It arrived on Sunday, 31st August 2025. I applied it immediately.
Within four hours, I felt something I hadn’t felt in weeks—relief. The burning sensation eased, and the bumps felt less angry.
By the evening, I was able to wash my face without enduring unbearable pain. That small act felt like a major victory.
The next day, I noticed the bumps were beginning to open and heal. New ones had stopped forming. By day two, the difference was dramatic. The sores were shrinking, the pain was fading, and for the first time in months, I felt hope.
Step 6: Daily Shaving Sped Up Healing (Updated 7th September)
When I first published this article on September 2, 2025, I did not include this. In Step 5, I mentioned that I shaved off my beard to expose the bumps.
What I did not mention was that the two doctors I saw (and my wife) advised against shaving while the bumps were still visible. So, my shaving in the first place was against conventional wisdom.
As I said earlier, when I started applying the zinc oxide cream, I felt relief almost immediately. However, I noticed that when the hair started growing back, new bumps began to develop, and it became very itchy.
When I noticed this setback, I wasn’t keen on shaving for the reasons I had already mentioned. However, as the days went on, it became apparent that the healing process stalled.
So, I decided to go against the conventional wisdom and shaved. Then, I noticed a steady progression of healing again, until the hair started growing back.
As you may have guessed, I’m a person who loves working with data. At this stage, based on the data I had gathered, it was clear that shaving off the beard contributed positively to the healing of the razor bumps.
Based on this data, I started shaving daily, and I am happy to announce that, as of today, September 7, 2025, the bumps have almost completely healed.
Step 7: Return to the Ingrow Go (Updated 2nd October)
When I started using the Zinc Oxide cream, I felt almost immediate relief. However, new ingrown bumps continued to appear, indicating that the bumps, although drastically reduced, were not completely resolving.
Then, I thought, “Why not try the Ingrow Go to see if it helps?”
I did, and it worked!
Once I reintroduced the Ingrow Go, I started seeing a steady reduction in the bumps, and within a few days, they were all gone.
As of 2nd October, 2025, when I added this last section, I had started regrowing my facial hair again, and it feels good!
Lessons Learned
Looking back, here are the key lessons from this painful journey:
- Not every bump is bacterial. Antibiotics won’t always solve the problem.
- Be open to alternative solutions. Sometimes, the simplest remedies—like zinc oxide—can outperform stronger medicines.
- Listen to your body. If a treatment makes your symptoms worse, stop it immediately.
- Patience is vital. Healing skin takes time. Quick fixes often disappoint.
- Don’t dismiss loved ones’ advice. My wife’s insight turned out to be the breakthrough I desperately needed
- Conventional wisdom may not always work (Updated 7th September 2025). Based on the 6th step I added today, I can also add this as part of lessons learned.
Conclusion
What began as a simple shaving issue spiralled into a two-month nightmare of pain, frustration, and failed treatments. I went through antibiotics, antifungal creams, and harsh products that only made things worse.
In the end, the solution wasn’t complicated at all. A cream with 40% zinc oxide—recommended by my wife—was what finally healed my skin.
This experience taught me that sometimes the best answers are the simplest. And sometimes, listening to the people who care about you can save you weeks of needless suffering.
